| (1) | Take a piece of string and hold one end in each hand and twist it several times and then release one end, it should simply untwist itself. | |
| (2) | Now do the same again but instead of releasing one end just bring the two ends towards each other and you will note that the string immediately wraps around itself. | |
| (3) | If one continues to twist the string between thumb and forefinger whilst bringing the ends still closer together a 2 stranded rope will form. |
