The Screw propelled "Terrain Twister"

A Mattel Tyco toy based on a means of propulsion with a surprisingly long history (Wikipedia Article).

For comparison here is a promotional film of a 1929 prototype, based on conversion of a Fordson tractor. Although not particularly fast the screw propulsion system provided high levels of torque.

The USSR space programme used a screw driven vehicle for recovering cosmonauts from space capsules landing in the birch forests of Siberia where the high torque allowed the vehicle to knock down trees to create a path.

More recently, a British team used screw propulsion to navigate through snow and ice flows to cross the Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia. Their vehicle used conventional tracks for speed but the screw propulsion to cross leads and climb onto ice flows.
