Bluebird of Chelsea

My first model is the "Bluebird of Chelsea". She is a twin engine motor launch, built somewhere in the 1930's for the Campbell family - (that's Malcolm Campbell, hence the "Bluebird" reference).

I found the plans in an old "Model Boat" magazine, together with some photos of the then recently restored boat. I built her as a plank on frame. After all the planking was finished, I then gave her a coat of fibreglass on the outside and a good coat of resin on the inside, (before any decking was added). This adds strength and makes the hull watertight.

The photos in the accompanying article were most useful, for details and finishing the superstructure. I put twin motors with separate controls in her.

Last, but not least, the real thing is a Dunkirk survivor. She was one of the flotilla of small boats that took part in that momentous rescue.
