December 2008: Bad Weather Continues!

On Thursday, 11th December, the pond was totally frozen over; seems like the Gulf Stream has shut down, at least the Setley Pond branch! Then overnight, Friday to Saturday, it rained! Here are a few photos. On Saturday the 13th December the Club Christmas lunch was the best place to be! The next day saw near freezing fog, but a reasonable turnout at the (rather cold) pond. In contrast, Sunday the 21st was mild, but very cloudy and grey so no new photos... roll on the spring! Fortunately, Boxing Day (26th December) was cold but bright for the Royal Lymington Yacht Club Boxing Day Event (pictured). To end the year, on Sunday 28th December most members expected the pond to be frozen over... so only a few braved the icy New Forest roads to discover that, surprizingly, it wasn't! However on the last day of the year... well here are some photos. If it carries on like this, action at the pond may be somewhat less than usual!

November 2008: Bad Weather

Rather a quiet time at the pond, maily due to the inclement weather. The Scale Section Captain, David McNair-Taylor, is providing protective equipment in the form of fleece jackets and beanie hats but there's a danger that we will all look the same and not be able to tell each other apart! Still the pond is starting to fill up again ready for next year. The 2009 Club Calendar has sold out already, although a couple of copies have been held back for the raffle at the Club Christmas Lunch.

October 2008: Scandal and Drama at the Pond!

On the 9th October there were reports of a club member, minus trousers, wading across to the Lilly pads to retrieve a recalcitrant model. Then, on the 12th October Ray Hellicar's MTB 77 hit a buoy, capsized, and sank. An anonymous hero lept in, swam out to the buoy and, diving down, rescued it from the silt. On the 16th October, Arthur Shannon's gunter rigged dinghy was hit by a squall and sank (above left). In this case Reg Radley waded out and performed the rescue... he said he would need more money to take his clothes off and wade in further! However Peter Oram has the solution (right).

September 2008: Portsmouth Model Ship Weekend

Portsmouth_Model_Ship_Weekend_2008 Although not a Club Event, David McNair Taylor and David Reith exhibited their models at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Model Ship Weekend (27th & 28th September, 2008) as members of the Surface Warships Association. There's some photos of the proceedings in our Club Events Gallery and even some movies of the action.

August 2008: Lymington Lifeboat Day

Lymington_Lifeboat_Day_2008 The club had a great display at the Lymington Lifeboat day on 3rd August 2008. The RNLI had record takings in the shop and a lot of public interest despite poor weather. David McNair-Taylor, the Scale Section Captain, thanks all who took part. The Lymington Operations Manager presented the club with a framed photo of the Lifeboat as a token of thanks. More photos are available on our Club Events web page.

July 2008: 30th Anniversary BBQ and Club Day

30th anniversary day
The Club's 30th anniversary BBQ and Club Day took place at Setley Pond on Sunday, 13th July 2008. The event was very well attended, the food was delicious, and only one boat caught on fire! Chris Chattaway won the impromptu "Steering Competition" and Louis Vaisey won the first prize in the raffle (a tug and barge kit donated by Peter Oram). Photos of the event are on our Club Events page. Finally, these were Ruff's thoughts on the day!

June 2008: Steering Competition

Steering Competition ImageThe Steering Competition for the Richard Graham Trophy took place on Sunday, 1st June, 2008. As usual John Frost had designed a fiendish course. Despite the late intervention of the Griggs family, who usually do well, the prize was won by a clear round from our Scale Captain, David McNair-Taylor. He then had the embarrassing honour of presenting the prize to himself! The overall results are available here and photographs are on our Photo Galleries.

May 2008: Navy Day 2008

navy Day Image On Saturday 10th May we held our first "Navy Day" at Setley Pond. It was well attended with everything from HMS Hood to a humble minesweeper, the weather was perfect for sailing the scale warships, we had the harbour set up and several white ensigns flying. It is intended to make this an annual event. Photographs of the action are featured on our Photo Galleries.
