A sunny, calm Sunday. New to the web site are Oliver Hawkins's fine "Monsoon" yacht and "Intercepter" speed boat, Ray Hellicar's "Brave Soldier" fast patrol boat and Graham Coombs's R36 racing yacht. The latter gave a demonstration of just how fast a racing boat can sail in very light winds!

The ice which has recently covered the pond had melted by this Thursday and the weather was mild but grey. Peter Burton's cruiser did some successful trials, Ken Dyers motor yacht just managed to keep underway in the light wind.

Despite the cold weather the Klingons forced Steve French to bring them to the pond for a fun day in their "Speedster" s peed boat. However they had trouble trimming the boat to suit their chosen warp factor. When the Royal Navy sent out the Perkasa to intercept them they came back to shore in a huff and went off to spend the afternoon destroying a planet somewhere.
With temperatures of -5C last night most of us expected the pond to be frozen. Excepting the Klingons, those members who turned up didn't bother to bring boats. However the wind must have kept blowing during the night and kept much of the pond ice free. Where the wave had been breaking on the island the spray had created lines of frozen breakers (see picture left, click for larger image or here are more photos).

[movie]
Paul Nixon has designed a simply constructed but effective machine for making your own model ropes using garden string and similar threads. An explanation of how ropes are made and a detailed description of how to build the machine can be found in our Hints and Tips pages. There is now a new movie in which Paul demonstrates how easy it is to use the machine to create a length of rope.

Not a lot of action at the pond on Thursday 12th January, perhaps because there was a cool breeze and drizzle in the air, later some light rain. Some visitors had 1m racing yachts and a few club members' sailing boats graced the pond. However here are some photos of Steve French's Waveney Class lifeboat, a new model to feature on the web site.

Gales have dominated the year so far. On Thursday 5th January Nigel James and Peter Taylor stood on the bank watching the wind raising spindrift from the pond. But it was calmer on Sunday and here is a movie of Peter Taylor's "Bardot" in action. Alan Bond helped with the filming and Alan has also produced a movie to demonstrate his new Programmable Engine Sound Unit.
