RAF Lymington

RAF Lymington (USAAF station 551)

Lymington Airfield was built by an RAF Airfield construction unit in winter of 1943. Two runways were constructed, E/W 1600 yds,N/S 1400 yds, along with several blister hangars (source: Wikipedia). One of these remains (see below). The airfield was a temporary facility using wire mesh Sommerfeld Tracking for the runways. This was later replaced with Marsden Matting (pierced steel plates) for the east-west runway.

The left photo shows RAF Lymington on 22nd May 1944. The centre photo is how it is today with the grass landing strip and blister hangar outlined. The right photo shows the WW2 facility overlaid on the modern landscape.

All that is left of Lymington airfield. The remaining Blister Hangar has been recently renovated and a private runway is in operation. Probably a plane is kept in the blister hangar. A commemorative plaque has been installed by Alan Brown. However few other traces of the former airfield exist!
